Ragdoll Kittens and Cats
Playfulpaws is a New Zealand registered breeder of Ragdoll kittens, a small Pedigree Ragdoll Cattery located in Tauranga in the sunny Bay of Plenty. We are passionate about the nature of the Ragdoll and the bond they form with their human companions. Being a small cattery, ensures our kittens are well handled, receive individual care and are lovingly brought up in our home, along with two pedigree miniature poodles and two pet Ragdolls.
Playfulpaws is a member of both Catz Inc and NZCF cat registries.
We are also proud to be an Accredited Ragdoll Cattery with NZCF. In our opinion, (for the sake of the cats), all registered pedigree breeders should have their cattery accredited.
Playfulpaws is dedicated to improving the Ragdoll breed to the world wide standard, which is in brief, have blue eyes and a distinct colourpoint coat.
About Ragdolls
Ragdolls are generally a large and muscular semi-longhair cat with a soft and silky coat, and are best known for their docile and placid temperament and affectionate nature.
Ragdolls have a tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up. Ragdoll cats are often known as “puppy’s of the cat world” due to behaviors such as their tendency to follow people around, their ease at being physically handled, and their relative lack of aggression toward other pets.
The Ragdoll is a cat with blue eyes and a distinct colourpoint coat. It is a large and muscular semi-longhair cat with a soft and silky coat.
Temperament
The docile, calm and floppy nature of the Ragdoll is a characteristic thought to be passed down from the Persian and Birman breeds.
Breed standards describe the Ragdoll as affectionate, intelligent, relaxed in temperament, gentle, and an easy to handle lap cat.
The animals are often known as “puppy’s of the cat world”, due to their placid nature and affectionate behavior, with the cats often following owners from room to room as well as seeking physical affection akin to certain dog breeds.
Physical Characteristics
The Ragdoll is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds with a sturdy body, large frame, and proportionate legs.
A fully-grown female weighs from 3.6 to 6.8 kg. Males are substantially larger, ranging from 5.4 to 9.1 kg or more.
The genes for point coloration are also responsible for the blue eyes of the Ragdoll. More intense shades of blue are favored in cat shows.
Although the breed has a plush coat, it consists mainly of long guard hairs, while the lack of a dense undercoat results in, according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association, “reduced shedding and matting”.
Colours
There are 6 basic colours;
- SEAL – is a dark brown that’s almost black.
- CHOCOLATE – is best described as a milk chocolate brown.
- RED or FLAME, is much like most red cats you’ve seen.
- BLUE – is a dark bluish grey. (SEAL dilute.)
- LILAC – is a noticeably lighter shade of blue/grey with a slight pinkish tinge. (CHOCOLATE dilute.)
- CREAM – it a noticeably lighter shade of red. (RED dilute.)
“Traditional” Ragdoll kittens are born white; they have good color at 8 – 10 weeks and full color and coat at 3 – 4 years.
Patterns
There are 5 basic patterns;
COLOURPOINT, is a cat of with any of the colours, that has just one colour on its body. Bear in mind that a colourpoint has a darker shade of its body colour on its points (nose, ears, tail, and paws). The points on a Ragdoll has one color darkening at the extremities (nose, ears, tail, and paws).
MITTED, is a cat much like the colourpoint and comes in Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red and Cream, but has white at some of the points. A mitted Ragdoll has white on its front paw tips, white on its rear legs and as an added attraction, has a white chin and chest. The ears and tail are the same as described for the colourpoint.
BICOLOUR, is a pattern of any of the colours mentioned above that has 2 distinct colours on its face. The colour on its ears and top of the head are the body colour, only darker, and with an white inverted “V” on the face. A BICOLOUR Ragdoll has white legs and white on the face, with a body that may be mostly white with splashes of colour OR with solid colour covering the body.
LYNX or TABBY, is a pattern of any of the colours mentioned above, but has dark stripes of the same colour that’s on the body. A Lynx Ragdoll has white inside its ears, with reddish nose leather. LYNX Ragdolls ALSO combine patterns. There are Colourpoint and Mitted Tabby/Lynx Ragdolls.
TORTIE, Is a pattern that is specific to only females. When a kitten has a Red father or mother and a Seal as the other parent, some of the female kittens will be Tortie. A Tortie Ragdoll has splashes of dark colour on her face and body that’s mostly Cream coloured.
A Blue Cream is a female Ragdoll that had one Blue parent and one Red parent, but is really a Tortie.
