Introducing the Kitten to your Family

It’s important to remember that your kitten will likely be likely stressed when it arrives home, due to the journey and being uprooted from the only home they have known as well as being away from their litter mates and human companions.

There are no set rules on how to introduce a kitten into their new home, because every situation is different.

When the kitten arrives home, provide some time out for the kitten in a small room, with the door closed and one maybe person to provide comfort and encouragement.

Open crate door and allow kitten to come out of its own accord.

The litter tray, food and water should also be in this room. Allow 15 – 30 min for this stage depending on the length of the journey.

After this period, if the kitten appears comfortable and is exploring, or purring, you may wish to go to next step.

Put the kitten back in the crate and move cat crate to the main room (e.g. lounge) keep the crate door closed.

Place the crate in corner of room, positioned so the kitten can view the room and observe.  You may wish to place the crate off the ground, so the kitten feels more secure.  Allow approx 60 minutes.

While people should be in the room doing their normal routine, make sure that their are no other pets, or loud noises (children, vacuum, etc) until the kitten becomes comfortable in its new environment and with its new companions.

Open the carrier door, and allow the kitten to come out in his own time, so the kitten can adjust to its new environment and can investigate in their own time.

It is likely, the kittens emergence from the crate will be slow and quiet.  Be sure to leave the crate on the floor, with the door open, as its safe area. Continue this until it is comfortable with its new home.

If the kitten wants to hide at some point, it can then retreat into the crate, which they know is safe.

Introducing Your Family to the Kitten

Introduce your family members to the kitten one at a time (especially with children).  Ideally, while sitting on a sofa, place the kitten in your lap, stroking and quietly talking).

Have each family member come and quietly beside you and allow them to stroke and quietly talk to the kitten. For the first week, or so (at least until the kitten is comfortable), introduce your Ragdoll kitten to each member of your family, every time you can.

Also, encourage everyone to call the kitten by its name.  This will allow your cat to know her new family easily.

Do Not Put the Cat on the Ground

It is highly recommended (for all family members) that when putting the kitten down, after cuddles, that they should not place the kitten on the floor. Instead place the kitten on the back of the sofa, or lounge chair.  Anywhere that is off the ground.

In a strange house, with strange people, putting the kitten on the floor by your feet, will likely put the kitten in “flight mode” due the strange tall giant beside them.

Once they have accepted its new companions (observed by the kitten walking up to you) you may discontinue the above.  It may only be necessary to repeat when any friends arrive.

Safe Area - E.G Cat Tree

Make sure that your kitten cat has their own safe area while trying to get used to the new environment. A cat tree is ideal.

It should be a placed where your cat can stay alone, so she will not get bothered with the normal activities you have at home, especially when there are children and other animals in the same roof.

Placement of Litter Tray

The litter tray should be placed where the kitten can see it (well away from their food, water bowls).

In the beginning, you may wish to have multiple litter trays, especially and if you have a large home.
You can make a temporary one by cutting down cardboard box (10 cm high), including a thick lining of newspaper in the bottom and then a layer of litter.

If you want to take you kitten to bed with you at night, you may need another litter tray for in your bedroom, if it is too far away from the regular litter tray (especially if the bedrooms are on the second floor).

Kittens are like little children, and they may hold it as long as they can, and then have to run for the box. You don’t want any mistakes in a new home because the kitten was frightened to go downstairs alone.

It is best to keep it on the main floor of the house. A half bath or laundry room off the kitchen is best, or even a back hall or den.

Also keep the litter clean.  Scoop the solids out daily and if you are using the recommended pine pellets, sieve the sawdust out every three day, or when necessary.

If used correctly, there should be no urine smell. Many people choose to leave less litter in the box, and change it more often.

Cats are very clean animals, and the most common reason for litter box mistakes is that the litter box is dirty.

Placement of Food & Water Bowls

The food, water bowls should be placed well away from where the litter tray is.

Be sure to clean and refill the water dish every two days or so, (daily in summer).

It is best to keep the dishes close to the kitchen sink. That way you will see it often, and can refill it as needed.

Bed

Make sure that you have a suitable comfy bed for the kitten to sleep on.  Place the bed far from the litter box and food.

Cuddles / Affection

Ragdoll cats are generally sweet and love to be cuddled most of the time.

Make sure to give this kind of attention to your new kitten, so that she will become comfortable more easily, and will feel loved.

Handling

Ragdoll cats that are friendly means that she was well handled well by humans when they were younger.

Therefore, if you want your Ragdoll kitten to stay friendly when it becomes an adult cat, make sure that your kitten is, or has been well handled, starting at a very young age.

Introduce your Ragdoll kitten to each member of your family, every time you can. This will allow your cat to know her new family easily.

Safety

If you love your cat, make sure that your home is safe for your cat to live in.

Take away small objects that your kitten may decide to eat that may become stuck in its throat.

Fix any loose cables and wires around your home, to prevent electrocution and to prevent your cat from being tangled.

Taking care of a cat inside your home is like taking care of a toddler.

Vet

Make sure that you have contacted a vet already, before even starting your search for Ragdoll kittens to ensure that your kitten will have proper health care regularly.

Introducing Your Kitten to Other Pets

If you have other pets, such as cats and dogs, you can expect a some fireworks at first.

It is usually not the kitten doing the hissing or growling, but the resident animals. Naturally they are hesitant towards a “newcomer” in their home.

After your new kitten has been in it’s room for a while, take him/her out, and let the other animals in. They can then sniff and become familiar with the smell of the newcomer, without the threat of actually seeing it.

Providing the kittens blanket / bed will help the existing pets become used to the new scent.

This will help somewhat when you are ready to introduce the kitty to them. The time the kitten spends in his/her room, will also help the kitten pick up the smells of your house, and not be so alien smelling to the other animals.

When you are ready to bring the animals together, make sure you are with them. Most adult cats that are not around kittens all the time are actually afraid of the kitten, so most won’t attack the kitten as long as the kitten doesn’t get too close.

With dogs, you will have to be careful, especially with the bigger ones, so they don’t overwhelm the new kitten with their sniffing and large friendly tongues.
